Skipping the cover page

Most documents shouldn't number the cover or the table of contents. Set the numbering to start at the first page of actual content — for example, "apply to pages 3 onward" with a starting value of 1 — so the body begins at page 1 and the front matter stays clean.

Avoiding overlap

If your PDF already has footer text (a document title, a date, a confidentiality line), a centered page number can land right on top of it. Put the number in a corner that's empty, or nudge the vertical offset so it sits just below the existing footer. Preview the first couple of pages before committing.
